Dashes and jumps are the most important of the basic actions. Master them to make gameplay much easier.
Push "1" while you’re walking to dash, making it possible to run over one-block gaps. If you are running from high to lower ground, you’ll be able to run through even bigger holes. Study the topography and cut down on wasted movement to make your game play as smooth as possible.
Change the height of your jump by holding the button down for varying lengths of time. When in midair, you can move slightly left or right: adjust your trajectory so that you land right where you want to. Learning the Wall Jump, where you kick a wall in mid-jump, will come in handy too. This move often helps when you’re about to fall into a hole.
Once you've mastered basic dashes and jumps, you can try these techniques.
When you jump while dashing, you can jump higher. If you time things right and jump again just as you land, you can perform double or triple jumps. You can jump pretty high that way, so it’s effective for when you’re grabbing the flagpole at the goal. Make sure you get that extra life!
Shake the Wii Remote controller so that you spin while in midair to increase the airtime of your jump. Use this technique well, and you’ll benefit in all sorts of ways: it gets harder to fall into holes, and easier to get extra lives at the goal flagpole.
When you stomp on some enemies, they become shells. Touch the shell while pressing "1" to pick it up and carry it. Carry the shell to an area with lots of enemies, then release "1" to throw it. You can collect coins and other items by hitting them with a shell, too. Be careful, because enemies who have turned into shells recover after a certain amount of time.
Take down several enemies with one shell throw and the more enemies you take down, the more points you’ll get. If you manage to defeat eight or more at once, you’ll start getting extra lives.
When you jump, stomp on an enemy while holding the button to jump higher. Not only will it be easier to nail your landing, it’s useful when you want to climb to a higher place. With this technique, you should be able to get lots of those hard-to-reach Star Coins.
If you stomp on several enemies in a row without touching the ground, the number of points you get increases with the number of enemies you stomp. If you stomp on eight or more in a row, you’ll start getting extra lives.
